Heat treatment

M7 / DIN 1.3348 / AISI M7 is a molybdenum-alloy high speed tool steel containing tungsten, chromium and vanadium. Toolman describes the grade as having good hardenability, superior wear resistance, high hardness after quenching and tempering, good grindability, high impact resistance and edge stability.
We supply M7 for cutting tools used in machining operations, Sendzimir rolls, segment and circular cutters, profile cutting tools, thread-cutting drills and cold-forming tools. It is also used for cold-forming mould applications including screw moulds, header punches and dies.
Our published maximum annealed hardness is 255 HBW for M7 and a minimum quenching-and-tempering hardness is 65 HRC. The grade is specifically identified for high hardness after quenching and tempering together with high wear resistance and cutting ability.
We specify annealing at 850–900°C and stress relieving at 600–700°C, with a two-hour hold for stress relieving followed by air cooling. Hardening includes preheating at 450–500°C and 850–900°C, followed by quenching as specified. Tempering is carried out at 540–600°C.
Our published chemical composition include M7 with 0.97% carbon, 3.00% chromium, 8.20% molybdenum, 1.40% tungsten and 1.75% vanadium.
We supply M7 rounds in 6–14 mm, 15–50 mm and 52–405 mm ranges, depending on condition. Square sizes include 7.2, 8.8, 10.5, 11, 13.5, 14, 17.5, 21, 27, 32 and 40 mm, along with forged-annealed squares from 52–305 mm.
