DB6 / DIN 1.12714 / AISI L6 Steel Grade

DB6, also known as DIN 1.2714, is a hot work tool steel with excellent toughness, wear resistance, and high hardness. It is particularly well-suited for applications involving high temperatures and mechanical stress, such as forging dies, extrusion dies, and die casting. This nickel hot work tool steel produced by Toolman has good hardenability, wear resistance, thermal fatigue resistance, and thermal stress resistance, good strength at high temperatures, and good tempering resistance.

We manufacture DB6, also known as DIN 1.2714 / AISI L6, as a nickel-alloyed hot work tool steel offering excellent toughness, wear resistance and high hardness. Its combination of hardenability, thermal-fatigue resistance, thermal-stress resistance and high-temperature strength makes it suitable for tools exposed to both heat and severe mechanical loading.

We supply DB6 for forging tools, press and extrusion dies, hot-pressing tools, moulds, mandrels, embossing tools and tool holders. We also list hobs, collets, punches, forming rolls, blanking or forming dies, thread-roller dies, shear blades, stamps, swagging dies, slitting shears and slitting cutters among its applications.

Our DB6 steel has a maximum annealed hardness of 248 HBW and a minimum hardness after quenching of 44 HRC. We also publish tensile strength of 1,000–1,400 MPa, yield strength of 1,045 MPa, elongation of 15–20% and impact toughness of 20–25 J/cm².

We specify stress relieving at approximately 650°C, soft annealing at 700°C, and hardening at 880°C. Depending on the selected hardening route, quenching can be carried out using water/oil, protective atmosphere/oil, oil, a hot bath or vacuum. Our published maximum quenching hardness is 58 HRC, with working hardness generally specified at 300–440 HB, depending on the application.

Our DB6 composition contains 0.50–0.60% carbon, 0.10–0.40% silicon, 0.65–0.95% manganese, 1.00–1.20% chromium, 0.45–0.55% molybdenum, 0.07–0.12% vanadium and 1.60–1.80% nickel, with phosphorus and sulphur limited to 0.03% each.

We manufacture hot-rolled DB6 bars from 8–65 mm diameter, forged and turned bars from 65.2–500 mm, and forged square bars from 50–500 mm. Our flat range extends from 6–410 mm thickness and 20–700 mm width.
