D2 / DIN 1.2379 / AISI D2 Steel Grade

Toolman Special Steels is proud to produce and offer D2 (1.2379) - a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel known for its excellent wear resistance and stability. It is commonly used for tools requiring high resistance to abrasive and adhesive wear. It is characterised by high wear resistance, superior ductility, extremely low deformation, and hardening crack tendency. It has very high hardenability and significant dimensional stability during the quenching process.

We manufacture D2 / DIN 1.2379 / AISI D2 as a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work tool steel. It offers:

Our D2 steel has:

  • Maximum annealed hardness: 255 HBW
  • Minimum quenching and tempering hardness: 59 HRC

Our tempering data shows approximately 63 HRC at 100°C, 59 HRC at 500°C and 51 HRC at 600°C.

Our heat-treatment guidance includes:

  • Soft annealing: 820–850°C
  • Stress-relief annealing: 600–650°C
  • Hardening: 1000–1050°C
  • Tempering: 480–580°C

Hardening may be followed by oil, air or a warm bath at 500°C, depending on the process requirement.

Our D2 composition includes:

  • Carbon: 1.40–1.60%
  • Chromium: 11.00–13.00%
  • Molybdenum: 0.70–1.20%
  • Vanadium: 0.50–1.10%
  • Silicon: 0.10–0.60%
  • Manganese: 0.10–0.60%

Phosphorus and sulphur are limited to a maximum of 0.030% each.
