M35 / DIN 1.3243 / AISI M35 Steel Grade

Toolman Special Steels is proud to produce and offer M35 (1.3243). It is medium alloy high speed steel and has better thermal hardness and wear resistance with better machinability than M2, because cobalt is added to it. . It features a strong cutting edge with good toughness, a deep hardening response, and maintains high hot hardness properties.

HEAT TREATMENT AND PROCESSES

Heat treatment

Heat Treatment Process Temperature (°C) Details Resulting Hardness
Soft Annealing 820-880 Heat uniformly, hold until soaked, cool slowly in furnace. Brinell hardness of 230-300 HB
Stress Relieving 650 - 700 Heat to specified temperature, hold for 1 hour, air cool. Reduces machining stresses to minimize distortion during further heat treatment.
Hardening
  • Step 1: 450-600
  • Step 2: 850
  • Step 3: 1050
  • Step 4: 1210-1250
Preheat to 450-600, then to 850, and finally to 1050. Harden from 1210-1250 followed by oil, air quenching, or warm bath at 550. 64-66 HRC after quenching
Tempering 540-570 Reheat to specified temperature, hold for 1 hour (repeat 3 times).

M35 / DIN 1.3243 / AISI M35 is a medium-alloy high speed steel. Toolman describes it as offering good high-temperature hardness, high wear resistance, high cutting ability, good machinability, fine and uniform grain size, and a strong cutting edge with good toughness.

Toolman supplies M35 for broaches, reamers, end mills, gear-cutting tools, shaving and shaping tools, twist drills, taps, special cutting tools, saw-machine blades and profile-cutting tools. This makes the grade relevant to manufacturers producing precision cutting and machining tools.

A maximum annealed hardness of 268 HBW and a minimum quenching-and-tempering hardness of 65 HRC. Our tempering data shows hardness ranging from 63 HRC at 200°C to a peak of 65 HRC at 550°C before decreasing at higher tempering temperatures.

M35 records 63 HRC at 200°C, 61 HRC at 300°C, 62 HRC at 400°C, 64 HRC at 500°C, 64.5 HRC at 525°C and 65 HRC at 550°C. Hardness then decreases to 64 HRC at 575°C, 63 HRC at 600°C, 55 HRC at 650°C and 46 HRC at 700°C.

We supply M35 rounds from 6–14 mm, 15–50 mm and 52–405 mm, depending on condition. Squares include listed HRA dimensions from 7.2 mm to 40 mm and forged-annealed squares from 52–305 mm. Flats extend from 5–105 mm in thickness and 21–205 mm in width, depending on condition.
