Toolman Special Steels is proud to produce and offer M3 (1.3344) - a highly alloyed high speed steel for good wear resistance and high hardness. M3 Type II is a tungsten molybdenum high speed tool steel designed to provide the great wear resistance required for severe cutting operations with a raised C and V content. It is used for high performance mills, reamers, broaches for processing hard materials as well as in the area of cold work steel e.g. for piercing dies in the manufacture of nuts.

Toolman describes M3 Type II as a tungsten-molybdenum high speed tool steel with increased carbon and vanadium content, developed to provide strong wear resistance in severe cutting operations.
We supply M3 for tap drills, reamers, heavy-duty milling cutters, dies, broach needles, hexagon socket punches and piercing dies for nut production. M3 Type II is highly associated with high-performance mills, reamers and broaches used for processing hard materials.
Toolman specifies a maximum annealed hardness of 280 HBW and a minimum quenching-and-tempering hardness of 64 HRC. Its published heat-treatment information indicates approximately 64–66 HRC after tempering, depending on the selected tempering temperature and treatment cycle.
Our product page specifies soft annealing at 820–860°C. Its hardening sequence includes preheating stages before hardening at 1190–1300°C, followed by oil or air quenching or a warm bath at 550°C. Tempering is specified at 540–570°C at least three times, resulting in approximately 64–66 HRC.
